Well, we have reached the half way point in another year. And so far it has been a very good year. We made it thru another inspection with a really great score that made us number one in the region. The cadets worked hard thru 2008 to complete their trainings, courses, TWT’s and advancements to bring home the number one spot. They also for the first time received a perfect score on the unit inspection of uniforms, general orders, customs and courtesies’. Well done to all the cadets. And an extra special thanks to the staff that did an excellent job in their duties to earn us a great score in admin and other areas. We have added new staff and cadets and seen some cadets graduate and move on. We can only say how much we will miss those that have graduated and moved on as well as those that left for other reasons.
Thanks to the command staff and the chief’s mess at the reserve center we now have access to the firearms simulator and we can even do over night trainings at the center. This will expand the opportunities we can provide our cadets. The command staff and especially the Chief’s mess have been instrumental in helping our program grow and improve the opportunities for the cadets. So a very special thanks goes out to the Chief’s mess and command staff for their continued efforts for the cadets.
As we look ahead, we are excited about the new training program that we are going to be implementing come this fall. We have been working diligently for the last six plus months to assemble the best training materials we could for the new plan. We will be covering land navigation using a program that is nationally recognized, a tracking/scouting program that is nationally recognized, search and rescue training in conjunction with the National Search and Rescue Association getting the cadets certified, survival training using another nationally recognized program covering urban and all other needs for survival, self defense training , and much more.
We opened our unit library with over 100 plus books at the end of last year with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Painter, the US Marshals, the Loether family, the Yost family, the Sherman family, the Lostether family, the Mignogna family, and many others and the library is continuing to grow with new donations from others. We will be installing our digital reference library coming in September which with the help of the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, FBI, CIA, Judge Advocate General’s Office, Justice Department, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, US Military University, PA State Police, California Highway Patrol, New York State Police, US Border Patrol, and many more organizations that have donated and helped us amass over 6,500 different training manuals, historical documents and other materials for our cadets to read and learn from on a vast range of subjects. I hope that the cadets will find both libraries exciting and educational.
The future is looking even brighter as we work to obtain a 27ft boat that we hope to have in the near future. We are also in the process of obtaining with the help of our friends in the Coast Guard large tents for our field exercises for sleeping, mess, supply and command use. They are also in the process of helping us obtain sleeping gear, mess gear and more so that we are better equipped for our field exercises.
This September a number of our cadets and staff will be attending the Medal of Honors Society convention in Chicago. This will give them the opportunity to meet with over 60 Medal of Honor Recipients’. Thanks to the efforts of LT Loether this great opportunity has come about. Not many can say that they have met one let alone 60 Medal of Honor recipients.
So as we move forward, we are excited for the future and the opportunities that we will be bringing to our cadets. If you are not on board come join us for we are sailing exciting waters.
Thank You,
LT Guy Mignogna II, NSCC
CO, Pittsburgh Battalion, 4-1
